Texas Hold Em Poker

A game of Texas hold 'em poker begins with each player being dealt two cards face down. These two cards are either called hole cards or pocket cards. These are the only personal individual cards that each player receives in the game. No one else gets to see your personal cards unless they need to be revealed in a showdown at the end of the game. The game then begins with a 'pre-flop'. Each player, beginning from the left, must bet on their hand or fold. Once this round of betting has been completed, and assuming there are at least two players left in the game, the flop round begins. The dealer places three cards down on the table face up. This flop is then followed by a second betting round. Once again players can choose to fold or bet. After this round the final flop happens, and a final round of betting, and possibly a showdown if there are still two players left.

If a player makes a bet but all the other players fold, then the remaining player is rewarded the pot without having to show their hand. If a showdown occurs, each remaining player must put down the best five card poker hand he can make from his two cards and the community cards on the table. The player with the best hand is the winner. If there are two players with the same hand then the pot is shared.

An essential part to playing Texas Hold 'em poker is being familiar with the different hand rankings. Without knowing these it is impossible to know if your hand is any good and whether you should bet.

These are the Texas hold 'em poker hand rankings in order of significance. The lowest type of hand ranking is a pair, this is when you have two cards of the same value. Next is a two pair, this is when you have two pairs of cards of the same value. Three of a kind is next up, and this is when you have three cards of the same value. A straight is next, this is when you have a descending row of different suits. A flush is when you have a hand all of the same suit. Next up is a full house; this is when you have a hand made up of one three of a kind and one pair. Four of a kind is when you have four cards of the same value in one hand.

The two best hands you can have are a straight flush and a royal flush. The straight flush is the second best hand you can have, and is when you have a descending row of cards all of the same suit. The best hand you can have is a royal flush. This is a descending row of the same suit starting from the ace.
