Craps Common Mistakes

When playing Craps, new and adept players alike make mistakes all the time; these mistakes can be identified as bad bets. When players make mistakes while playing Craps they bet when they shouldn’t because the house has a significant edge over the player. Let’s take a look at some of the big mistakes Craps players all too commonly make.

One of the big mistakes Craps players make is playing the field bet. This bet seems appealing, but you must remember that the casino is looking to steer you toward placing bets that are not fruitful. The casino is, after all, looking to make a profit. When you are offered the field bet you are placing a bet on the fact that the following roll will equal a two, three, four, nine, ten, eleven, or twelve. You are only betting on a single roll and your bet is not used for the entire Craps session. You are therefore limiting your betting when you make the field bet to a small part of the game.

Some Craps players take advantage of the lay bet. This type of bet is also called betting against the Craps dice. The bet only wins you money if and when a dice shooter’s pass line bet actually loses. Some people believe that it is not good luck to bet against the Craps dice. If you opt to play this bet, you will be charged a commission equaling as much as five percent on any of the bets you win.

Proposition bets can also prove problematic. When you approach the Craps table you will spot an area that has a variety of different, somewhat exotic bets on it. You will see illustrations of every bet and the combos required to win. For instance, you may see a spot with the words 9 to 1 and then a picture of two dice with the numbers 3 on them. This means that you will have to roll two threes, equaling six, before the dice shooter actually roles a seven. This is called a hardway bet and such bets are only payable on four, six, eight, and ten.

Buy bets can also prove to be bad bets. You buy numbers by betting on them; these numbers have to come up before the shooter rolls a seven. With this kind of bet you end up paying a five percent commission for winning. A buy bet is good and is considered better than a place bet on a four or a ten, but the place bet is considered better for all other numbers.
